![]() ![]() In his early twenties, Frank left for London. He modestly reckons he got the job not for his good looks but because he worked cheaply and only needed a few musicians. His musical career took off when he was still a teenager.Īfter completing his National Service Frank fronted his own television show Campfire Favourites, singing country music and other favourite songs, including Frankie Laine's I Believe. His parents had given him a ukulele for his 11th birthday and his Gran presented him with a guitar the Christmas he turned 13. It wasn't long though before the fans were flocking to hear Frank's voice, including that distinctive falsetto and yodelling, in live performances and on the radio. "When I delivered the milk I put a yodel on the end of it and woke everybody up - I'm sure they weren't very happy with that," he says with a grin. He practised on early morning milk runs before school. After the war the family returned to Australia, setting up home at Dural near Sydney, where Frank lives now.Īfter hearing a song on the radio called I Miss my Swiss Frank tried yodelling and found he could do it. I Remember You was the top selling single in the UK in 1962 and the first of three consecutive No 1 songs he recorded, becoming the first British-based performer to achieve such success.įrank Ifield was born to Australian parents in England in 1937.
